Certain former MySQL staff and contributers have banded together to create a company by the name of SkySQL. The company offers database services designed for MySQL technologies but they have not officially forked MySQL although their keen interest in MariaDB suggests that they are not confident in the future of MySQL.
This looks very much like the split that happened in the OpenOffice.org community which resulted in the Document Foundation and LibreOffice. Where there's smoke there's usually fire and if this turns out to be a reliable MySQL fork then we're two thirds of the way towards effectively nullifying Oracle's acquisition of Sun. After this, all eyes will be on Google to see if they're going to expand the Dalvik VM into a fully functional Java fork. Things are not looking good for Oracle executives at this point.
