Quake3 in HD

Dust off the old PK3 files: Although it's over 10 years old, Quake 3 is still being played in offices around the world. Since id software has open sourced the Quake 3 engine; a community of developers has created an updated engine called ioquake3 and has recently also included a high resolution texture pack . ioquake3 is 100% compatable with Quake3 v1.32 so you will be able to join servers running the original Quake3 engine and vice versa. All you will need are the original pk3 files found in your Quake 3 baseq3 folder.

Nvidia 3D Vision for Linux

Nvidia have confirmed that Linux will get 3D Vision support but only for Quadro GPUs for now . Linux has always been big in the scientific world, the Ubuntu Software Center even has a "Science and Engineering" applications section. It appears that the biomolecular sciences would benefit from stereo support in Linux and Quadro GPUs should suite them fine. Although there are no plans to support Geforce GPUs at this stage but i would imagine that given the right amount of demand they should have no problem introducing it since they'd have already gone down that road with the Quadros. Ubuntu is currently pushing over 12 million users and this number will jump significantly with the release of Lucid Lynx which is a long term support version of Ubuntu and a major step in feature innovation. As was pointed out in this thread ; the kind of people who use Linux are the kind of people to want to play around with gadgets like Nvidia 3D vision and i am absolutely one of them. W...

2010 Fifa World Cup in 3D

We as South Africans are exceptionally proud to be hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup . I try to put myself in the shoes of the international community to understand what a South African hosted world cup means to them. With the obvious negative perceptions of Africa (albeit largely unwarranted), i wonder if this world cup will just fly under the radar and be an unremarkable event in the history of Fifa world cups. Fortunately this event coincides with the boom in consumer stereoscopy and it has been confirmed that this world cup will be recorded in full stereoscopic 3D. This means that our shiny new stadia, packed with vibrant vuvuzela blasting South African fan culture, will be the first in the world to be seen in immersive 3D creating an unforgettable sporting event for more than just the attending spectators. To have the forefront of consumer entertainment technology brought to one of the largest sporting events ever held in South Africa is for me, an excel...

3D Cinema, 3D HDTV and 3D Gaming

Stereoscopy or 3-dimensional (3D) imaging has been around since the early 1930's  and is long over due in mainstream  entertainment . I have been a stereoscopy enthusiast since at least the age of 11 when i created my first stereoscopic image using my father's stiffy loaded Sony digital camera . Since then i have dabbled here and there but my biggest venture into stereoscopy was for my class 11 year project in 2003 which was part of my Waldorf education. The most affordable way for a student like myself to view stereoscopic images was to learn to cross my eyes with great precision. Once i started earning my own salary i immediately invested in some eDimentional glasses. At the time Nvidia were occasionally maintaining their stereoscopic drivers and certain games like Doom 3 and Dungeon Siege 2 became the most amazing experiences i have ever had in gaming. The driver support eventually petered out and the eD-Glasses started gathering dust to my greates...
